The Board that certifies Excellence in the
General Practice of Medicine
WELCOME TO THE BOARD

The American Board of General Practice (ABGP) is a non-profit examining and certifying board which has been recognized by the American Academy of General Physicians, and the licensed general practitioners who make up its membership, as being the board which certifies excellence in the practice of general medicine. The ABGP was organized in 1995 with the mission to examine physician candidates, who submit to the ABGP's evaluation, for the purpose of determining their qualifications and abilities to practice medicine at the standards established by the ABGP. Since its founding, the ABGP has examined over three hundred physician applicants. The examining and certifying process of the ABGP is over-seen by its Board of Certifiers which is comprised of physicians each of whom are diplomates of member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Today, the ABGP remains dedicated to the ideals of ethics, excellence and integrity and to improving and enhancing healthcare in the United States by incentivizing physicians to strive for excellence in the practice of general medicine.
